La Llotja is a beautiful old Gothic market building and current exhibition space in Palma

It is located just opposite from the harbor, and is easy recognizable with its Gothic style, looking like a fortress or religious construction.

La Llotja was designed and constructed by Mallorcan architect, Guillem Sagrera, in the years between 1426 to 1447. The street in which La Llotja is located, is partly named after Guillem Segrera.

Up through the 17th and 18th century, Palma’s status as the main trading center of the Mediterranean district, saw a dramatic fall in activity due to new naval routes. La Llotja then changed from being a trading center of corn and live stock, to serve as a marketplace for weapons and tools.

At the end of the 19th century, La Llotja was transformed to an exhibition hall, which it has served as since then.

When you are standing in this amazing hall, you can easily imagine the hectic atmosphere of tradesmen bargaining in here.

Today, La Llotja houses a permanent art exhibition worth looking at, at least from the outside.

La Llotja, is one of the must-see sights in Palma!
