ALCÚDIA OLD TOWN & Market

Alcúdia is like an open-air museum, every time you turn a corner a new exhibition opens. Just outside the old urban core, you will find the impressive excavation site of the first Roman capital on the island dating back from 123 BC, and next to it, one of the oldest and most well-preserved chapels. The biggest landmark of Alcúdia, is the old massive city walls and gates dating back from the 14. century evidencing the importance of this area. These walls have been declared cultural heritage and are protected. Behind the walls, you can look forward to discover some beautiful architecture representing almost every cultural era on the island, from Moorish styles to Regionalism. Also, don’t forget one of the biggest markets is held here every Tuesday and Sunday morning.

S’ALBUFERA NATURE PARK

One of the biggest nature parks on the island is located right behind Alcúdia and Playa de Muro, the impressive s’Albufera wetlands. This amazing park covers a surface of almost 2,600 hectares giving home to some 200 species of Mediterranean wildlife. The s’Albufera park is a popular place for cyclists and walkers to enjoy some unspoiled biodiversity while feeling the natural serenity this place brings. Needless to say, if you are enjoying activities such as birdwatching you are really in luck here.

CUEVAS DE CAMPANET

Mallorca is famous for the massive stalctite and stalagmite caves found on the island. Most famous are the Dragon Caves in Porto Cristo and the Artà Caves in Canyamel, but if you want to escape the hours of cues and high prices, the Campanet caves are a great alternative and almost as impressive.

CASTELL D’ALARÓ

One of the most historic fortresses in Mallorca is found in Alaró, more precisely at Puig de Alaró, the mountain rising over the village. Up here, you can look forward to breathtaking almost divine panoramic views as far as the eye can see, while you stroll around and explore the amazing ruins of what was once one of the most important military bastions on the island. The old fortress has been here since prehistoric times, although it was the Moors who first built a base here. The fortress was also the scene of a bloody and brutal fight between knights fighting for the independence of Mallorca and the royal troops from the mainland, who ended up conquering the island. On the way to the old fortress, you will pass a checkpoint on the mountain, a small farm and restaurant called “es Verger”, a family driven place that has become famous for its freshly slaughtered lamb shoulder. This is undoubtedly one of the best places on the island to have lamb, namely because it is fresh and a truly authenthic experience. You can drive by car to the restaurant, but will have to walk the remaining 30-45 minutes to the Castell d’Alaró. If you are a hiker, it is also possible to sleep at the small primitive hostel set up up here. What a view to wake up to!

SA BASSA BLANCA

One of the biggest and most diverse collections of contemporary art in the Raiguer region and in Mallorca, is found at the Yannic & Ben Jakober Foundation housed in one of the island’s most impressive mansions, the Sa Bassa Blanca estate. Of highlighted exhibitions here, you will find the collection called “els Nins” (the children), a collection of portraits of noble and royal children from the Middle Ages from all over Europe. Another interesting exhibition, is the hall called “SoKraTES” which features an impressive collection of contemporary works, among these, the rhino skeleton with a blanket of Swarowski crystals behind it and Einstein’s theory of relativity written in neon lights. In the gardens, you can stroll around in the sculpture park inspired by the animal kingdom, hundreds of curious and cute sculptures of fabels and animals reside in these beautiful gardens. Also, don’t forget to visit the scenic rose garden. The impressive mansion is itself a piece of art, a symphony of different art stylistics brought together. This is a spectacular attraction, and can be visited and enjoyed by adults and kids.
