SANTUARI DE CURA AND THE HOLY MOUNTAIN OF RANDA

Santuari de Curi, or just “Cura” in common talk, is a famous religious place in Mallorca. Cura is a monastery and an old sanctuary dating back from prehistoric ages, but became famous after Mallorcan philosopher Ramon Llull had this place as his study and wrote the first ever book in the Catalan language here. Cura is situated on the very top of the Randa mountain, known as “The Holy Mountain of Mallorca”, a name it has aquired because there are 3 monasteries situated on this mountain, whereof 2 of them are open for visits; Cura and Ermita de Sant Honorat, the latter built into the mountain walls. Today, Cura has been transformed into an interesting museum that takes you through the history of this sacred place and exlpains the life of Ramon Llull and the gramma school that was here. The monastery, which is of newer date, is now a popular place for accommodation in the area. From up here, you can look forward to breathtaking views of the entire Pla region and on the other side, the bay of Palma. Especially sunrise and sunset is a marvellous sight up here.

ELS CALDERERS

Els Calderers is one of the most impressive fincas in the Pla region that has now been turned into an ethnological museum that you can explore. The tour exhibits life of the social elite and their servants up through the late Middle Ages and the Industrialism. Inside, you will pass through the fincas many impressive rooms decorated with original furniture and items that has been collected. The tour includes the private chapel, the wine celler, the men’s lounge and hunting room, the women’s room and the fully equipped kitchen. On the attic, you can enjoy an interesting exhibition of machines and tools used for cultivation and agriculture on the finca. Outside, stroll around in the beautiful gardens and visit the donkeys and black pigs in the stables. At the end of the tour, enjoy a glass of local produced wine and bread with homemade sobrassada. The visit to Els Calderers is suitable for both adults and children, an interesting and different experience in Mallorca.

SINEU MARKET

Strange as it may sound, the market in Sineu is a big tourist attraction and should not be missed. Every Wednesday morning, the normally so quiet historical town of Sineu transforms into a vibrant scene of excited people looking to get the best bargain by haggling prices on thousands of goods. While at the market, you have a unique opportunity to explore the many historic buildings in the town, and taste “the real Mallorca” by visiting one of the great restaurants and cellers here such as Can Torero or Molí d’en Pou. The market in Sineu is such a big attraction that most tour operators and travel agencies arrange trips here filling hundreds of coaches full of excited tourists.

SANTUARI DE BONANY

If you can’t get enough of breathtaking views, enjoy a trip to the historic sanctuary of Bonany, an old church and convent situated on the peak of the Bonany mountain that seperates the areas of Petra, Vilafranca and Sant Joan. The place became famous after famous priest and missionairy Junipero Serrá from Petra held his final mass here before leaving for California and Mexico to convert heathens and was killed. The trip to the Bonany can be done by car, on bicycle or on foot, the latter by following the old pilgrimage path passing the 12 via crucis points. Regardless of how you get here, you are sure to be rewarded with the divine views as far as the eye can see over the Pla region. If you want to know more about the famous son of Petra, Junipero Serra, go and visit his house museum in Petra village.

MURO ETHNOLOGICAL MUSEUM

The ethnological museum in Muro has been awarded several times for its great collections of artefacts and items. As you go through this impressive mansion, you will see and learn about life in Mallorca throughout times. Some of the highlighted exhibitions includes the pharmacy, the collection of painted tiles, the courtyard and the collection of pompous ceramics. The ethnological museum is free to visit and open every day.

WHERE TO FIND THE PLA REGION

The Pla region is made up of alle the municipalities located in the geographical center of the island. Translated, “Pla” means “plain”, a name given to the region because of the thousands of hectares of flat countryside, only “broken” by a few mountains such as the Randa mountain, the Bonany mountain and the Sant Miquel mountain.
