Vilafranca de Bonany, or simply Vilafranca, is the third of its kind in Spain. The name derives from the two words “Vila” (town) and “Franca” (free), which comes to “Free Town”. The meaning of a free town in Spain, derives back to the 16th century, when the king allowed for high ranked officers or noblemen to live in a town free of taxes. Bonany, simply indicates that this Vilafranca is located by the Bonany mountain.

Vilafranca, is a tranquil area on the Mallorcan countryside, somewhat in the middle of the es Pla region.

Traditions, such as agriculture, local produce and siestas values high here in Vilafranca. It’s the perfect retreat if you just want to get away from everything and everyone.

While local bars and small restaurants dominates the town of Vilafranca, more chefs from the bigger urban areas has seen a light of opportunities in Vilafranca and the agriculture here. This results in some quite interesting kitchens in the town and on the finca hotels in the surrounding areas.

Moreover, Vilafranca has a great tradition for cultivating melons and is populary known as the melon town of Majorca.


Vilafranca has become highly popular amongst cyclists and especially road cyclists, who come to enjoy the central location of the area well connected to the hilly landscapes in the bordering municipalities.

The weekly market in Vilafranca, is held Wednesdays at 8 a.m at Plaça Major.
