The church of Sant Miquel, is dedicated to Miquel Fabra, professor in theology and confessor of king Jaume I (James I the conqueror), who conquered Mallorca and Valencia. He also took great part in the conversion of heathens.
The church is supposedly built upon the former main mosque of what was once Medina Mayorque (Palma’s name under Islamic rule).
The only remains from the old Gothic church from the 13th and 14th centuries, is the main facade with the rose window, the two eyes and the relief of Saint Michael.
During the 17th century, the church underwent serious renovations, giving it its present Baroque style.
1. the main altarpiece, is a work of Francisco Herrera and pays special tribute to Saint Michael, Saint Gabriel and Saint Raphael.
2. In the 3rh chapel on the right side, you will see a painting of Mary with her child. This painting, was brought here by Jaume I after the conquest, and a symbol of the patron of Palma.
