Castell d’Alaró is one of the most important fortresses in Mallorca
The ruins of this 14th century military fortress built in 815 metres, offers an unique and spectacular story, not to mention the views from up here.
Due to the strategic location of the castle, it is most likely that a fortress has already been here during Moorish times on Mallorca. However, it was in the post Catalan conquest period that the massive walls were built.
Highlighted periods of the castle, was during the 13th, 14th and 15th centuries, where it played a part in the military when Mallorca was a kingdom and its later incorporation to the Catalonian-Aragonese crown.
Up until 1741, a military detachment was installed here.
The enclosure consists of a first walled outer enclosure and a second line of inner wall, where the tower of honor stands out. This tower must be crossed to gain access to the interior of the fortress.
Once inside the walls of the castle, you are standing in a courtyard where one of the bloodiest battles in history of Mallorca was fought. It was back in the late 13th century, when local heroes and martyr,s Guillem Cabrit and Guillem Bassa, fought soldiers of the Aragon crown to protect the crown of Mallorca. Eventually, they were caught and executed in the village, in the little square that is now named after them, Plaça de Cabrit i Bassa.
In 1622, a pilgrimage to the castle to honor the relics of Cabrit and Bassa, laid the first stones to the small temple up here, known as “Ermita de Alaró”.
The interior of this sanctuary is simple and austere. It is a single nave with barrel vault, the ceramic floor tiles and wall decorations by the Italian artist Antonio Soldati stand out. The baroque altarpiece presents images of the virgin Mary and Cabrit and Bassa.
