The market building was constructed in the early 20th century as a solution to the unhygienic state of the population. It was particularly the sale of meats and fish happening on the streets that made the inhabitants sick. The very first use of this building, however, was imprisonment of the politicians who had promoted it, which happened when the war broke out in 1936.
