Best Things to do and see in Alaró

Alaró is a treasury of cultural heritage, an area with many places of interest to explore and many things to do. Alaró contains a good handful of sights, among others. the famous medieval castle, Castell de Alaró, crowns the whole area from its location on the mountain top above the villgae, an insanely popular hiking destination.

VISIT THE RUINS OF CASTELL D'ALARÓ

Alaró is home to two of the most renown places in the arean; Castell d’Alaró and Restaurant es Verger. Castell d’Alaró is an impressive old fortress built at the summit of the mountain rising over the valley. Today, only ruins are left of this old fortress, nevertheless, still an impressive attraction and the panoramic views are both indescribable and breathtaking. Somewhat halfway up the mountain, the farm and restaurant of es Verger is situated. The restaurant has become famous for its freshly slaughtered lamb shoulder.

ENJOY WALKING IN THE AMAZING SCENERY

There are several marked hiking routes from Alaró that are highly loved by hikers from all over the world. Probably the most obvious is the trip to the impressive Castell d’Alaró fortress on top of Mount Puig de Alaró, which rises 850 meters above sea level. But there are also several beautiful routes from Alaró that lead you through magical valleys of olive groves, pines and oak, with natural waterfalls and wild viewpoints, e.g. at the Orient Valley. You will also pass the Font de ses Antiques, a natural spring that since Moorish dominance has been the main source of Alaró’s water supply. You can also see some of the ancient Moorish watermills that are still preserved.

Up on the iron horse and full speed through the valleys

The Alaró area is perfect for cycling as you have a wealth of choices in terms of level and difficulty. One of the most popular cycle routes from Alaró goes through the mountain pass and to the Orient Valley, which is located in the neighboring municipality, Bunyola. Orient is one of Mallorca’s most beautiful valleys, and the route has a low level of difficulty, so do yourself a favor and take the herd with you on this route.

EXPLORE THE STREETS OF ALARÓ

Alaró is a charming little village with narrow streets and rustic house facades which forms a maze around the main square in the center. Behind this charming exterior lies a wealth of history telling the story, of not just a single community, but of a culture. For example, it was here in Alaró that the knights, Cabritt & Bassa, fought the army of Aragon to defend the kingdom of Mallorca. There are several interesting buildings to stop and have a closer look at while understanding their place in the local history. Some of these include Son Guitard, Sa Bastia and Can Jaumico.

Place de la Vila is the main square in the heart of Alaró. The square is flanked by a nice handful of bars and restaurants open most of the day. Across from the restaurants is the town hall – Casa de la Vila – a stunning building featuring unique regionalism stylistics.

INN Mallorca Aparthotel – Slightly withdrawn from the beach, you’ll find the INN Mallorca Apartment hotel, a price-friendly versatile option in close proximity of restaurants, shops and bars.

Where to eat Alaró

If you’re wondering where to eat in Alaró, the answer lies in the village’s strong culinary traditions and its close connection to the Tramuntana mountains. Food in Alaró is simple, authentic, and deeply rooted in Mallorcan culture. Here, you won’t find modern fine dining or experimental cuisine — instead, expect classic Mallorcan dishes served without frills, just as they have been for generations. Many of the restaurants in Alaró resemble traditional country inns rather than contemporary eateries, adding to the village’s rustic appeal.

One of the best places to eat in Alaró is the famous farm restaurant Es Verger. Over the years, Es Verger has become one of the most well-known restaurants in the area, attracting both locals and visitors thanks to its freshly prepared lamb. This family-run restaurant offers a communal dining experience, with long tables and shared seating that reflect the relaxed and traditional atmosphere of rural Mallorca.

Es Verger is located high in the Tramuntana mountains, just below Castell d’Alaró, making it a popular stop for hikers and day visitors exploring the area. While it is possible to drive to the restaurant, the narrow and winding mountain road requires careful driving, as some sections only allow one car to pass at a time. Castell d’Alaró is approximately a 30–60 minute walk from Es Verger, making it an ideal place to eat before or after a hike.

Alaró has everything you need during your stay — and more. As you wander through the village’s charming narrow streets, you’ll find a selection of small local shops, cafés, bars, and kiosks that make everyday shopping easy and enjoyable. The atmosphere is relaxed and authentic, with a strong local feel that reflects daily life in rural Mallorca.

What truly puts shopping in Alaró on the map, however, is Tony Mora. The famous boot brand has its headquarters right here in the village, making Alaró a must-visit destination for leather and footwear enthusiasts. Tony Mora is best known for its high-quality cowboy boots, which are sold across Mallorca — including exclusive locations such as Port d’Andratx — as well as on the mainland in places like Marbella. Visiting the brand’s home base in Alaró adds an extra layer of authenticity to the shopping experience.

If you’re looking for even more shopping options, the town of Inca is just a 20-minute drive from Alaró. Known as Mallorca’s leather capital and the island’s third-largest city, Inca offers a wide range of clothing stores, outlet shops, and delicatessen boutiques. Inca is also home to Mallorca’s largest weekly market, held every Thursday morning, where visitors can browse everything from leather goods and fashion to local food products.

This market is a great way to blend in with the locals, and maybe you’ll find an offer you can’t resist on leather goods or local produce. No matter what your intentions are, it’s a wonderful way to start the day, and to really feel the local atmosphere.

Festes de Sant Pere i Sant Roc (Celebrations of Saint Peter and Saint Roque)

Patron saint of Alaró Sant Roque is celebrated on August 16th with a series of traditional events and activities in the town center. Some of the most emblematic performances, is the dances of the Cossiers, a local dance group that has its roots in medieval times.

In the week leading up to the day of Saint Roque, there is a full program of fun activities arranged by association of the historical neighborhood called “Damunt”. This week is known as the celebration of Saint Peter.

Fira de Gremis Artesans (artisan fair)

The annual artisan fair in Alaró is a great attraction to both locals and tourists, who enjoy the vibrant and traditional ambience. The fair is held in the beginning of October in the town center, where hundreds of stalls and booths are set up with typical Mallorcan crafts, music and dance performances sets the mood and tastings appeal to your every sense. Another highlight of the fair is the dancing demons.

S’Apuntador – Theater festival

For many years it has been a tradition to celebrate the fine art of theater and scene plays in Alaró and many other villages in Mallorca. Throughout November, you can enjoy a great variation of different plays held all over the village.

Mostra Gastronomica de Bolets (Mushroom Fair)

One of the best treats of the late autumn in Mallorca is the mushrooms growing. Several villages on the island celebrate this wild vegetable with a fair full of gastronomical activities and events, including Alaró.

Christmas market

In the middle of December the streets and central square of Alaró is decorated in beautiful colors and lights creating a unique and cozy atmosphere in the little mountain town. It is time for the annual Christmas market, a market both young and adults look forward to visit.

Location and how to get to Alaró

Whether you prefer to drive, be driven, walk or spin the pedals, Alaró is indeed reachable.

With public transport: From Palma Intermodal Station at Placa d’Espanya, find train line T1 (Manacor). Get of at Consell – Alaró Estació and take bus 342 which will take you directly to Alaró town center. This trip will take about an hour.

By car: From Palma, head on freeway Ma-13 in direction of Inca. Take exit number 17 (Consell, Alaró, Binissalem) and follow the signs to Alaró. The ride should take you less than 30 minutes.

By taxi: The taxi fare from Palma to Alaró is approximately 45 euro.
