Sanctuary of Sant Salvador
The sanctuary of Sant Salvador is located at the top of a mountain, more than 500 meters above sea level and blessed with a fascinating panoramic view.
The Santuari de Sant Salvador was built back in 1348 as a safe place the inhabitants could escape to during the outburst of the black plague. At that time, it was commonly believed that the higher you could go the safer you would be from illnesses.
In the mid-18th century, the monastery was completely restored.
The altarpiece is built in honor of Imagini’s Passio and dates from the 15th century, just like the stunning sculpture of the Virgin Mary guarding the “Chapel of Devotion”.
Next to the monastery is the colossal monument in honor of Christ, 7 meters high and standing on a platform of 37 meters. The sculpture dates from 1934 and has a modern touch that, unlike the monastery in the background, creates a quirky contrast to the delight of all visitors.
On the hilltop next to the monastery stands Sant Salvador’s iconic high stone cross on the lookout platform, which is often highlighted in pictures from here. It takes approx. 10-15 minutes to walk from Sant Salvador to the cross and panorama platform – but what a wonderful view that awaits!
