Because of his bonds to Biniamar and Selva, former prime minister of Spain, Antonio Maura Montaner, raised funds for the village to build a new a bigger church to replace the existing village church of Santa Tecla.
However, in 1909, Maura was held responsible for an execution of a leader of a rebel group in Catalonia, and forced to leave his position. Immediately after, all projects of his was discarded, just like the new church here in Biniamar.
Today, the unfinished church is used for sports and cultural activities.
