Santa Maria is the massive fortified church in Andratx’s old town
The first church in the Andratx area was documented in a bull by Pope Innocent IV, in 1248.
However, it was not until the 15th century that the present church construction was built, and even not in its current form. At this time, the church had neither bell tower, side chapels nor sacristy.
In the middle of the 16th century, a defense tower was built right next to the church, as attacks from pirates were feared everywhere in Mallorca.
At the end of the 18th century, the church was finally expanded to its current form. Especially the chapel of blood inside the church is worth noticing.
