Cal Comte de Montenegro

Can Montenegro was the seat of the Counts of Montenegro, of the Despuig lineage, one the foremost names in the island’s nobility.

They inhabited this house until the 17th century. Some of the family’s most distinguished members included Ramon Despuig i Martínez de Marcilla, who became Grand Master of the Order of Malta in 1736, as the commemorative stone on the facade evidences, and, most notably, Cardinal Antoni Despuig i Dameto (1745 – 1813), multi-talented personage, educated and refined, who had a notable pictorial and archaeological collection in his estate of Raixa.
