The story of the Arabian Baths in Palma
The Arabian baths, or Banys Arabs as the original name of this place is, is a little oasis situated about 3 minutes away from the cathedral of Sa Seu.
The so called “hammams“, was a a bathing house during the Moorish period in Mallorca (902-1231). Before it became a hammam, this place is believed to have been the property of an Arab nobleman.The architecture of the Arab baths, is typical Byzantine!
Notice how each of the pillars inside the baths is different from one another. This is actually an early example of recycling, as the pillars are salvaged from ruins of Roman constructions.
The garden belonging to the Banys Arabs, is an oasis of wild flowers, orange trees, palms and cactus. You will see many locals come here to enjoy a refreshment during the day.
The Banys Arabs is not a very big place, but it’s an important place because it tells you a story of a Palma that once was.
