The imposing church of Pollença is the best example of the Knights Templars’ dominance of Mallorca. The area of Pollença was given to the order by king Jaume I just after the Christian conquest of Mallorca, as a payment for their assistance in the campaign.
The church is built in a Baroque style, with Greek-Roman ornamentation.
The big bell tower of the church, was actually first added during the 15th century, when it was built as a part of the extensive watchtower network around the island.
Inside the church, notice the Barouque altarpiece from 1754 that was moved here from the local monastery of Monte Sion during the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1767.
Another fascinating treasure inside the church are the 14 paintings of the “Way of the Cross”, painted by the artists Atilio Boveri (Argentina), Eugen Massgraber (Germany) and Joaquín Tudela (Spain), in the beginning of the 20th century.
The church is impressive on the inside as it is from the outside. You should enjoy a refreshment at one of the many small restaurants and bars at the central square of Pollenca old town, while you admire this enormous and impressive construction in the middle.
