Rectory of Sineu

catholic parish church esglesia de santa maria in sineu mallorca
About

Sa Rectoria de Sineu, is the name of the old rectory building in this historic town. The rectory is located just next to the enormous parish church of Mother Mary, on the Sa Placa aquare.

The rectory has its own entrance, on the backside of the baroque lateral entrance of the church.

During the late 1800-s, the rector, Pere de Alcántara Peña, added a third floor to the building, and modified the entrance as well as the facade.

Entering the rectory building, you will be led though a small hall and to a beautiful patio. On the left side, you see a stone plate with the goat of arms of Sineu, with the text “Sineu vila la primera, té la prima per bandera”, meaning something like: Sineu, first village with own flag.

Another beautiful piece of art to find in the rectory, is the painting of Santa Maria, made by famous painter, Gabriel Möger back in 1509 for the big parish church next door.

The rectory building, is exhibiting many of the treasures found in Sineu, like old ceramics from medieval times, many of them with Arab paintings on them.

Sencelles

Sineu is to many inhabitants, namely the local inhabitants, the very heart of Mallorca due to the central location and the many historical monuments and buildings in the town. Sineu is perhaps most famous for its Wednesday tourist market where the narrow silent streets are turned into a commerce mecca of hundreds of thousands of people bargaining. But Sineu is actually one of the greater places to visit and go sightseeing in Mallorca, as you will find a nice handful of interesting constructions such as the Santa Maria church, the former Minims convent, the former royal palace, Gothic hospital etc., all places that tell a story from a period in the history of Sineu and the making of this town. Moreover, Sineu is a great place to discover some traditional Mallorcan cuisine as you will find a number of cellers and bars that serves delicious dishes worth traveling for. Last but not least, Sineu hosts a number of annual events and happenings where local traditions are celebrated with festivities and fairs, an excellent opportunity to feel the soul of Mallorca when it truly unfolds.
