Torre de Canyamel is not just an outstanding piece of military architecture from the 13. century, it is also an authentic exhibition space.
Torre de Canyamel dates back to the time of the Catalan conquest of Mallorca. After the division of Mallorca among the counts and knights who had participated in the Reconquista, Torre de Canyamel was set up as a protection against attacks during these times of war and fights.
The impressive fortress is built in Gothic military architecture with slots surrounding the rooftop platform.
Torre de Canyamel was among the first fortress buildings in Capdepera and Canyamel, along with the tower Torre d ‘Nunis, which later expanded and became what we now know as Castell de Capdepera.
Over time, Torre de Canyamel was owned by various private landowners, but it was not until 1867 that Torre de Canyamel fell into the hands of the present family’s ancestors.
Ethnologists believe that it was this tower that gave name to the village of Canyamel, due to the surrounding farm’s production of sugar cane and honey. In Catalan, ‘mel’ means honey.
Today you can experience exciting art exhibitions and seductive classical concerts in Torre de Caynamel, while taking in the authentic setting of the old fortress building and beautiful patio.
Next to the fortress, you will find a wonderful restaurant renown for its suckling pig. The restaurant serves dishes made from own local and own producem, and the setting in an old farmhouse next to the impressive Torre de Canyamel makes the dining experience even more authentic.
