Torre d’en Beu was a crucial part of Mallorca’s defense
Torre (tower) d’en Beu was built in 1569 as part of Mallorca’s defensive strategy to counter the many brutal pirate raids on the island. More than 85 watchtowers were constructed on the coastlines around the island, some with battery. The towers communicated using smoke signals and flags until the signal reached the towns and an army could be mobilized.
Torre d’en Beu is located 35 meters above sea level, on the rocky cliffs. The tower has a diameter of 7 meter and a height of 12 meter, which gave excellent conditions for spotting hostile vessels in the sea. During an attack in 1617, the watchtower was severely damaged and had to be rebuilt.
On the cliffs in front of Torre d’en Beu you can see the little lighthouse of same name.
