In 1875, archduke Ludwig Salvator (Luigi Salvatore) bought this property of Son Marroig and the neighboring property of Miramar situated in the municipality of Valldemossa.
Under his ownership the estate underwent severe restoration works from where it got its Spanish-Italian style. Also, the old 16th century watchtower was restored in this period.
The most significant feature of this property has to be the marble temple overlooking the coastline. The temple was made in Carrara, Tuscany, and brought here to Son Marroig.
It was from this temple, that Ludwig Salvator wrote most of his masterpiece ‘Die Balearen’.
After his death in 1915, the property was sold, and in 1929, the first museum was inaugurated. Inside the house, you can explore the amazing and adventurous life of Ludwig Salvatore, his impressive art collections, old maps and belongings. The original furniture is still here too.
Son Marroig is an absolute must-see sight here in Deià.
